There are
moments when it is painful to be vindicated. Back in September, I wrote in my
previous blog “The road to hell is paved by good intentions.” Unfortunately,
the situation of migrants in Europe and in the Middle East has worsened, and
part of the blame can be laid at the feet of the Stateswoman whose good
intentions received so much praise less than two month ago. Remember, she was a
frontrunner for the Nobel Peace Prize! Remember the reception of the first
trains in Munich. The cheering crowds, the flowers.
Today, the
crisis of migrants has reached Germany. Angela Merkel’s Government is divided,
and everybody is trying to accelerate the expulsion of those who don’t qualify
for refugee status. European heads of states and governments are anxiously
trying to stop the flux of migrants at the source, to no avail. Every day, many
thousands of desperate people reach the Greek islands, just to be sent up North
through several countries, none of which wants to keep them and none of which
is there destination anyway. They want to go to Germany or to Sweden who
promised them…a future too good to be true. All they remember is that the Chancellor
has said that they are all welcome, and none of the later corrections of that
declaration has reached the rumour mill.
It is sad
to say that whoever, willingly or not, misleads distressed people, even with
the best of intentions, bears a huge responsibility for their fate.
